REVIEWS ON CASTELVECCHIO

I vini d’Italia 2009 – Le Guide de L’Espresso
Filippo Rocchi is running scrupulously the family’s company, that is set up as one of the most reliable and promising wineries of the area of the Florentine hills. The production aims at the affirmation of the character and the originality of the wines, without losing themselves in attempts of emulation of established models.

L’Almanacco del Berebene ’09 – Gambero Rosso (Slow Food ed.) – Issue Novembre 2008

Chianti Colli Fiorentini “Il Castelvecchio” ‘06
The Rocchi family has our continuous recognition, but this is the simple demonstration that all the work made with passion and great attention to details, is giving great results. Il Castelvecchio is the most spread label and thus mainly representative for a production that distinguishes always for the excellent results of quality. Ruby-red color, integral and distinct perfumes, fruity, solid mouth, juicy and savoury finish.

I Vini d’Italia 2009 – Gambero Rosso – ( Slow Food Ed.)
It’s always a pleasant confirmation the form of the family Rocchi-estate. Maybe it’s because of the enthusiasm they are able to transmit, or because of the lavish will to look always for improvement of the own production, even if they reached a respectful quality level, it is true that the proposed wines achieve every year a major stylistic definition, remaining anchored to the territory, also regarding the used vines. The best one has been Il Brecciolino ’05, a blend of mainly sangiovese with a little support of petit verdot and merlot: wide aromatic spectrum in which one finds spices, black fruits and balsamic hints. In the mouth the tannins untangle extremely well in a full body, with a fresh and convincing finish. Very well also the two versions of Chianti dei Colli Fiorentini, for vintage ’06, of incredible drinkability, relaxing and juicy, as well as Riserva Vigna La Quercia ’05, with smooth tannins and an intriguing sapidity. Simple, but correct and pleasant is
San Lorenzo ’07, produced of malvasia and trebbiano in equal parts.

Duemilavini – Il Libro Guida ai vini d’Italia 2009 - Associazione Italiana Sommelier
The beautiful hills at the southside of San Casciano Val di Pesa, on the old “Franchigena” road in direction of Certaldo, are probably between the less known of the Chianti area, even though easily reachable and full of charm. The history is present everywhere, the nature consist of mainly undergrowth and trees, the vineyards are only in the best places. What really failed, was the engagement of enlightened producers, able to upgrade the quality in the bottle. Today, thanks to a small number of wineries, in the first place especially Castelvecchio, this is finally happening. In the estate of Filippo and Stefania Rocchi, they started more than ten years ago to implant new vineyards and to reorganize the wine making, so to obtain a large selection,

with interesting points, like for Igt Il Brecciolino. This year the refining of the original 100% Canaiolo Numero Otto has been extended and will be included in the following issue.

Il Brecciolino 2005 (4 bunches of grapes – from 85 to 90)
Typlogy: Red Igt – Grapes : Sangiovese 85% Petit Verdot 8% Merlot 7% - Gr. 14% - Bott. 10.000

Chianti Colli Fiorentini Vigna La Quercia Riserva 2005 (3 bunches of grapes– from 80 to 84)
Typoglogy : Red Docg – Grapes : Sangiovese 90%, Cabernet Sauvignon 10% - Gr. 14% - Bott. 15.000
Garnet-red, a nose of plum, violet, corob and soil. On the pallet soft, savoury with vivid tannins and lots of fruit. One year in barrique.

Chianti Colli Fiorentini Il Castelvecchio 2006 (3 bunches of grapes – from 80 to 84)
Typology: Red Docg – Grapes : Sangiovese 90%, Merlot 10% - Gr. 13,5% - Bott. 20.000

Ruby, with hints of minerals, flowers and wet soil. Soft, with fruity flavours and a finish of bitter almonds. 7 months in cement and barrique.

San Lorenzo 2007 – Malvasia 50% Trebbiano 50% ( 2 bunches of grapes – from 74 to 79)
Bright straw-yellow colour, nose of peach, aromatic herbs and plane tree flowers. In the mouth consistent and simple with hints of almonds. Steel and cement.

Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani 2009 – Luca Maroni
Best wine : Il Brecciolino 2005 (87)
Consistency : 32 – Balance : 26 – Integrity : 29

Sensations : great power of spices, great élan of blackberry. Intense perfume of vanilla. Exceptional powerful. Dense and tight fibre on the palate, with big velvety tannins. This is a champion in consistency, intense aroma of blackberry.

The other wines :
Chianti Il Castelvecchio 2006 - (85)
Chianti Riserva Vigna La Quercia 2005 - (83)
Chianti Santa Caterina 2006 – (82)
San Lorenzo 2007 – (79)
Superior wines proposes Filippo Rocchi’s Castelvecchio: especially leaders in high concentration of grapes. Hence, able to offer their strong and dense contents with an excellent dosage of components. Very clean and tonic in its aroma Il Chianti Riserva Vigna La Quercia 2005, full bodied Il Chianti Il Castelvecchio 2006, certainly one of the best. Real champion of density is Il Brecciolino 2005.

“Il Brecciolino” Rosso Toscano Igt 2003 – “Vigna La Quercia” Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva Docg 2004
Sangiovese, merlot and petit verdot are the varieties of vines of the Brecciolino, real flower in the buttonhole of the Fattoria Castelvecchio. Ruby and garnet-coloured. Intense nose with perfumes of cherry and plum, vanilla, tobacco, cocoa, leather. Balanced in the mouth with tannins that are well integrated in the general structure. Long finish with aftertaste of plum and blackberry jam.
Great demonstration as well for Vigna La Quercia ( sangiovese 90%, cabernet sauvignon 10%) that ages in new barriques for 12 months and then refines further in the bottle for another 6 months. Ruby color with garnet-coloured glare, hints of ripe fruit and red berry, opposed by hints of flowers and spices. Well-balanced and pleasant taste , with good balance alcohol/acidity and convincing tannins.

Wine Tuscany (Vinitaly 2009) – by G. Pellicci
The 38 years old Filippo Rocchi and the 26 years old Jacopo Bonucci are between the youngest expressions.
Dynamic but linked to traditions, this is the profile of the producer under 40
“…We are going through a complicated economic period – explains Filippo Rocchi, 38 years old producer of wine company Castelvecchio in the production area Chianti Colli Fiorentini ( Chianti Florentine hills) awarded with the Diploma of Honour for “Il Brecciolino” Rosso Igt 2004 – nevertheless I have many motivations that induce me to take risks in my work.
I refer most of all to my great passion for wine and the emotions that each tradition is able to offer. Mine is indeed a dream that is driving me in the attempt to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather Renzo, who in 1962 inaugurated our wine farm in San Casciano Val di Pesa. Making wine today is like creating a work of art, in which it is indispensable to be innovating and yet to maintain our traditions, just like our choices to produce a Canaiolo varietal and to select autoctonous vines do confirm.”
“Il Brecciolino” produced by Filippo Rocchi is an IGT, from a selection of Sangiovese grapes, Petit Verdot and Merlot, awarded in the 14th category (wines produced as from the third year of the harvest, with mainly 75% and more of autoctonous grapes) with the Diploma of Honour, exactly because the wine was classified between the first five wines of its category.

Newspaper Corriere della Sera - Corriere Fiorentino Sunday 22/03/2009 – by Helmut Failoni
Among the excellences:Il Brecciolino 2004 di Castelvecchio, Rosso toscano IGT : basis of Sangiovese grapes, with the addition of Petit Verdot and Merlot.
